Overview

The iconic Table mountain is a popular destination for guests visiting Cape Town. Its famous flat top, which seems as though someone physically carved its shape, stretches approximately 3km from side to side. As one of the seven natural wonders of the world, Table Mountain has impressive fauna and flora with over 2200 species of flowers and 1470 floral species.

This incredible giant hugs the cityscape standing at an impressive 1,085 m above sea level. Many visitors enjoy riding the cable car, which takes you up the mountain giving you an incredible bird's eye view of Cape Town. You'll see Robben Island in the distance, the beautiful white beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton, Lion's head, the waterfront, the giant Atlantic ocean, and more.

Long before Europeans arrived in Cape Town, Table Mountain was named Hoerikwaggo by the Khoi and San people. The mountain was sacred to these people, they believed that their god Goab or Tsui lived there. In 1503 a Portuguese navigator, Admiral Antonio de Saldanha, gave it the name Taboa da Caba meaning the Table of the Cape.

why Go?

There are so many amazing hiking trails, with the shortest one being the Platteklip Gorge, which takes roughly 1 to 3 hours depending on fitness level. Alternatively, you could catch a fantastic cable ride that takes you up the Mountain, along your journey the floor slowly rotates giving you an amazing panoramic view of Cape Town.

Enjoy sights of the incredible Table cloth, which are massive dense clouds that continuously pass over Table Mountain's flat top giving the illusion that a "cloth" is resting over the flat top. These "cloths" are formed as moisture-laden air arriving from the Atlantic ocean blows against the eastern slopes of the mountain, forcing it to rise. Catching sight of this magnificent feat of nature will leave you awestruck.

When to Go?

The best time to visit Table Mountain is during the dry summers, between November to March. The perfect time is during the early mornings around 8/8:30 am when it's not too busy, making for a perfect time to catch the cable cars and enjoy amazing views.
